HISTORY

Port Alberni has an interesting history. Technically, the City is one of Canada's newest because it was once two separate 'Twin' cities that came together in 1967. However, each of the former townships of Alberni and Port Alberni have their own histories, influential figures, and heritage sites where notable events happened. Digging back even farther, the history of human settlement in the area now known as Port Alberni goes back 3-5,000 years. Trade, commerce, recreation and art have been happening in the area of Port Alberni for centuries.

Understanding where we came from helps us understand where we're going.
